Useful Resources
At AFDI we believe in helping fire door inspectors and building managers to find the important information they need. Most of it is free to access and the ‘External Links’ below will with one click take you to the domain of another organisation.
Essential Reading
All fire door inspectors should have a copy of BS 8214 as it provides essential information.
Other useful documents that provide much of the information we need to inspect fire doors are as follows:
The Code of practice, Hardware for fire & escape doors
This document contains detailed information about the individual ironmongery and hardware components that are used in the fire door assembly.

Intumescent Fire Seals Association
On the website of the Intumescent Fire Seals Association, there are numerous documents that tell us more about the types and functions of intumescent products and smoke seals.

Architectural & Specialist Door Manufacturers Association (ASDMA)
On the ASDMA website, there are numerous documents about the specification, installation and maintenance of fire doors.

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF)
DHF is the Door & Hardware Federation and they also provide guidance in the form of their Best Practice Guides. Though you may need to apply for membership to access them.

Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF)
GGF is the Glass & Glazing Federation. They provide best practice guidance about fire-resistant glazing but again you may need to apply for membership.

Warrington Certification
At the Warrington Certification website, you can access the certificates and datasheets for all types of fire doors, ironmongery, door hardware, seals and glazing. It is both useful and interesting to read these data sheets as they provide information about how these products should be installed including their ratings and the limitations as to their use.

Falcon Panel Products
Falcon Panel Products are an importer of doors and on their website, there are numerous detailed technical manuals. These make interesting reading and can provide an appreciation about the fabrication of fire doors from door blanks and installation requirements for various door
types, and fire ratings including permitted configurations and limits to dimensions.

The UK Government Website
Government publications relating to fire safety and fire doors in buildings are available. These are usually free to access and may be updated from time to time.
* The Consolidated Advice Note and other documents at the website (including the Supplementary note to building safety advice for building owners) have been withdrawn by UK Government and should be treated as historical reference documents. The UK Government intends to publish updated guidance, including fire doors, during 2022.
Local Government Association
LGA publications relating to Fire Saftey
Safelincs
Safelincs are a supplier of fire safety-related products. You may find it interesting to visit their online fire door forum but clearly, the content is from various contributors and may not necessarily always be correct. So use caution in terms of the content you find there. Generally, though the more you read on the subject of fire doors, the broader your knowledge can become.
